Fig was our second resident we brought into the co-ed home. Our first resident did not stay very long; however Fig stayed for about six months. We met Fig doing some volunteer work through a community outreach. From the moment we interacted with him our hearts moved with compassion to try and help him. Fig was homeless living on a very low-income check. He had been on the housing list for years at this point and was somewhere near the number forty range in line. We searched and searched the county for places to rent that he could afford but all the ones that were doable had long waiting lists.
On top of all this, Fig had a drinking problem and honestly that didn't make things easier. So for awhile we helped him pay for his stays at hotels. When he would get his check he would pay for at least a week up front, which was over half of his check. We then would help him out with the rest of the month as we could.
When Chasty purchased the home we thought about allowing him to come stay but we wanted to make sure it was the right decision. Months later we finally decided yes and brought Fig in. We tried working with him as much we could and we were happy to know he wasn't sleeping on the streets. Fig would do okay for a bit but always reverted back to the drinking. Unfortunately, we later had to make a decision for Fig to move out due to this and especially for liability reasons but thankfully he was able to stay in a building a friend of his had. This bought him some time and he finally was able to be placed in affordable housing on his own.
Grant it, Fig was definately quite the character. A grumpy one at that and many times ungrateful. Rarely did you hear him speak good of anything. Fig sure didn't make it easy to help him. He knew all of this too. He knew he wasn't easy to love. In fact, he would ask all the time, "Why are you so good to me?"
But more than being a grumpy man, Fig was a good man. He really was. You could see that if you looked deep into his heart and past all the rocks of bitterness & hurt that had clumped around it. Fig was also a veteran. And as much as he could frustrate you and make you angry, he also could make you laugh. We will forever remember Fig and look forward to seeing him again someday.
