April Payne, our co-founder and vice president, and her dog Hudson passed his AKC Canine Good Citizen test, as well as his therapy dog testing on February 22, 2022. They are an official registered therapy dog team! We are thankful to have this duo offer animal assisted therapy services for our outreach.
April and Hudson go into settings such as assisted living centers, hospitals, and/or residential substance abuse programs.
One day, Chasty asked one of her clients at work, "What is one thing that would improve your day?” One girl answered and said, “To pet a dog. I just want to pet a dog.”
This girl's answers proves just how animal therapy can be beneficial.
Animal therapy, also called pet therapy or animal assisted therapy, refers to various services using animals to help people with specific physical or mental health conditions. Animals - in our case, Mr. Hudson - may be able to provide comfort to help a person’s condition when they are in need. Many people confuse therapy and service dogs. Service dogs are specifically trained for a task for their owner. Hudson is a therapy dog, who shares his love, comfort and support with those around him.
We have seen Mr. Hudson calm a stressful mother during a DSS supervised visit with her child. We have seen him put a smile on many faces of the elderly population. And we have seen him play with women whose face lit up when they saw him in the room.
